BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 
Kensington-Bellwoods Community Legal Services is a non-profit corporation. It is run by a volunteer Board of Directors which consists of community members who live, work or have a substantial attachment to the catchment area served by the clinic.
 
Responsibilities of a Board Member:
  • Serve in a volunteer capacity without remuneration or profit.
  • Be actively involved on one or more Board committees in addition to attending monthly Board meetings (approximately 3-6 hours per month).
  • Have a commitment to and understand of the purpose, policies and programs of the Clinic.
  • Be aware of changing community trends and client needs. Represent the clinic in the community.
  • Work cooperatively within a group.
Becoming A Board Member:
 
We welcome those with financial skills, collective agreement/labour negotiation experience, community organizing skills and those who are involved in and/or interested in social justice. Nomination of candidates to serve as members of the Board can be made at the Annual General Meeting. Candidates must be members in good standing, at least 5 clear days before the date of the election. Written nominations can be handed in before the start of the meeting and must indicate that the nominee consents to stand. Below is a description of the committees that both clinic Board and staff join to carry out the work of the clinic.
 
Finance Committee: Deals with preparing budgets and funding applications, and reviews spending. Responsible for monthly financial report to Board.
 
Policy Committee: Deals with issues related to our funder [Legal Aid Ontario] such as financial eligibility criteria for services, evaluation of effectiveness of service, Board development, new policies and revisions, requests for endorsements and reviews statistics and staff meeting minutes as well as approval of membership.
 
Personnel Committee: Deals with training, evaluations, benefits, personnel policies and reviews personnel records and staff minutes.
 
Negotiating Committee: Deals with negotiating new collective agreements with staff; responsible for formulating management demands, negotiating with staff and Union representatives and reporting to Board on progress and getting Board approval of changes.
 
Community Development: Oversees the development and implementation of law reform, public legal education and community development objectives, membership recruitment and publications.

New Board Recruitment Notice:
The KBCLS Board of Directors is seeking new Board members. Directors must be or become members of the clinic and either live in or have a substantial attachment to the geographic area the clinic serves [Bloor Street to the Lake, Ossington/Strachan Avenue to Yonge Street] and agree with the Statement of Principle. Interested individuals should submit a Board membership questionnaire.  Board recruits will be asked to attend three Board meetings before being appointed to the Board. We are seeking individuals with experience in finance, community development and representatives of the client group served.
